Bowden State Fish Hatchery

  • Situated 10 miles east of Elkins is the Bowden State Fish Hatchery. The facility is open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The Bowden State Fish Hatchery stocks streams, lakes and rivers throughout North Central West Virginia. The facility places more than 200,000 trout into waterways during the stocking season, which lasts from January until May.

Laurel Fork Wilderness Area

The Laurel Fork of the Cheat River is characterized by its narrow valley floor with regularly dissected slopes and long narrow ridges. The continuous forest cover of primarily Beech, Maple, Birch, and Cherry is occasionally broken up by beautiful meadows along the river. Within the combined 11,839 acre Wilderness Area the elevations range from 2,900 feet to over 3,700 feet.

Monongahela National Forest Headquarters

The Monongahela National Forest established in 1920 is located in the north central highlands of West Virginia. Elevation ranges from just under 1000′ to 4863′ above sea level.  Variations in terrain and precipitation have created one of the most ecologically diverse National Forests in the country.  Enjoy breathtaking vistas, peaceful country roads, gently flowing streams, and glimpses of the many species of plants and animals that inhabit the Forest.
